45% of Americans are now using AI to find local business recommendations

A homeowner types “best HVAC company near me” into ChatGPT on a Thursday night. Three businesses come up. One of them books the job by Friday morning. The owner of that company has no idea ChatGPT mentioned them.

That is not a hypothetical scenario for 2028. It is happening right now, at scale, across every local service category in the country.

In 2025, 6% of American consumers said they had used an AI tool to find a local business recommendation. By March 2026, that number was 45% — a sevenfold increase in under twelve months, according to BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a study of 1,002 US adult consumers published March 10, 2026.*1 AI is now the third-most-used channel for local business discovery in the United States — behind only Google and Facebook, and ahead of Yelp, TripAdvisor, and every other review platform.

THE CHANNEL THAT GREW 7× IN TWELVE MONTHS

ChatGPT leads the AI local-discovery stack at 31% of AI-assisted local searches. Google’s AI Mode follows at 23%, then Gemini at 19%.*1 These three models are now fielding queries about which plumber to call, which dentist is taking new patients, which gym is worth joining, and which accounting firm handles small businesses — in every city in the country, every hour of the day.

The underlying infrastructure is enormous. As of October 2025, ChatGPT had 800 million weekly active users, per OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.*2 Google AI Overviews reached 2 billion monthly users as of the Q2 2025 Alphabet earnings call.*3 Perplexity processed 780 million queries in May 2025 alone, with around 30 million monthly active users.*4

Trust is following adoption. BrightLocal found that 63% of consumers who use AI for local recommendations trust the results — and 42% trust them as much as traditional review platforms.*1 Most still cross-check (88% fact-check what they find), but the initial decision to call is increasingly made at the AI output stage, before any independent search.

BEING ON GOOGLE AND BEING VISIBLE TO AI ARE TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THINGS

Google’s local 3-pack surfaces 35.9% of business locations when a local query is made. For ChatGPT, that visibility rate drops to 1.2%. For Perplexity, 7.4%. For Gemini, 11%.*5 SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index — which analyzed 350,000 business locations across 2,751 multi-location brands — describes AI visibility as “3 to 30 times harder to achieve than ranking well in traditional local search.”

Google’s local pack is built on a continuously updated index of business listings, reviews, and geographic signals. AI assistants — particularly ChatGPT and Perplexity, which together drive the majority of AI local searches — draw from web content, third-party directories, and publicly available mentions. A service business with an optimized Google Business Profile and 200 Google reviews has built an asset that Google knows well and that ChatGPT may have barely encountered. As BrightLocal’s CEO Myles Anderson put it in the March 2026 report: “LLMs can’t see inside Google’s walled garden of reviews.”*1

THREE SIGNALS THAT DETERMINE WHETHER AI RECOMMENDS YOUR BUSINESS

01

WHAT AI READS ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS

BrightLocal’s “Uncovering ChatGPT Search Sources” study (November 2024, 800 manual local searches) found that business websites accounted for 58% of ChatGPT’s local business citations, third-party mentions for 27%, and directories for 15%.*6 For a local dental practice, HVAC company, or law firm, this is a clear diagnostic: your website needs dedicated pages per service line, not a single page listing everything. Your business needs to appear on Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, and industry-specific directories. And your name needs to appear in local editorial content — the kind of third-party mentions that tell a language model you are recognized, not just self-described.

02

YOUR REVIEW PROFILE IS AN AI VISIBILITY SIGNAL

SOCi’s 2026 Local Visibility Index found that businesses recommended by ChatGPT averaged 4.3 stars. Businesses with review response rates below 5% and average ratings near 3.4 stars were “effectively invisible in AI recommendations.”*5 SE Ranking’s November 2025 analysis of 129,000 domains found that businesses listed on multiple review platforms — Yelp, Trustpilot, and industry-specific directories — earned 3 to 6 times more AI citations than single-platform businesses.*7 Language models are trained on publicly available web content, which includes reviews. A business with a strong, multi-platform review presence gives a model more consistent positive signal to draw from. A business with reviews only on Google is visible to Gemini and largely invisible to everything else.

03

CONSISTENT DATA ACROSS THE WEB IS NOW THE BASELINE

The gap between where consumers are finding businesses and where businesses have invested their visibility follows a familiar pattern. It existed in 2008 when local SEO was new. In 2014 when Google Maps became dominant. In 2018 when reviews became the primary trust signal. Each time, the businesses that moved early captured the category before competitors understood the shift. In 2026, the shift is AI — and it is moving faster than any of the previous ones. Consumer adoption went from 6% to 45% in twelve months. Business visibility in AI recommendations sits at 1.2% on ChatGPT. That is the gap. The businesses that close it first will own the category in AI search for the same reason early Google adopters owned local SEO: they showed up before everyone else arrived.

When someone asks ChatGPT for the best in your niche, which three businesses come up — and is yours one of them?
